A clematis question

A clematis question

This is the first year I’m growing clematis and I’m not very familiar with the plant. I looked around online and didn’t even realize how many types there were (and I’ve thrown away the tag so I don’t know what kind I have.)

We’re supposed to get a late frost tonight, do they need to be covered? With the early spring they’re all leafed out and one has some huge buds on it about to flower. Last night we may or may not have gotten a frost; it was very windy, and on one of the plants one of the longer stems is all wilted and brown.

I think everything else that’s out will be fine, fingers crossed. I don’t normally worry about this stuff and I’m glad I didn’t jump the gun on tomatoes and peppers (it was so tempting with the weather we’ve had!) But last fall I got a bunch of perennials I’m not too familiar with so I don’t know what will take a beating from a frost and what will be just fine.

zone 5, central iowa (frost advisory tonight!)
