A hardy caladium
I've always thought of caladium as a delicate plant but this little guy has been through a lot. He is one of the bulbs I planted two weeks before Mother's Day, when the ground was still a bit cool. I thought all of the bulbs had rotted. I have no idea if this was one that I tried to start in a pot of dirt which has since been discarded, or in the ground in another part of the yard. All I know is he's survived the spring and the summer and finally had the strength to peek his little leaf out last week. I found him growing amidst the pachysandra which are in a little bed of their own. I planted the pachysandra in an attempt at staving off the neighbor's weeds. I figured since this little guy has survived he must want to live so I potted him up and am going to over winter him indoors. The bulb wasn't buried, was just sitting on top of the dirt. I'm tickled because I had forgotten what color the first caladiums I tried to grow were and now I know.
