adding husband to lease
I moved from a house to an apartment to save money to buy a house. I got married a month and a half into my lease. My husband unexpectedly had to deploy early. We wanted to add him to my lease and the plan was for us to renew my lease in July for 6 more months (he'd get back in September '09) and then we would buy a house. Unfortunately, this apartment complex is just horrible in more ways than is tolerable and there's simply not enough room for my pets, my office, etc. With him being in the Army, once he was on the lease, we could utilize a military clause that allows me to break a lease without additional charges. They've already raised the rent, the water, the sewer and the trash here, my place smells like constant cat piss, etc. I spoke with the office manager (KY) and told her I wanted to add my husband to which she responded, "We may or may not add him. He's stationed two hours away and he can't have more than one residence." So he went to JAG and asked and they didn't care. So I fill out an application and paid the app fee and signed it using the Power of Attorney he sent me. I didn't hear anything for almost 7 weeks. I called 7-8 times. I stopped by 7-8 times. The office manager was never in and they kept telling me they would have her call me. I found out the name of her supervisor (WY), called her, explained the situation, and she said she would have KY call me. That afternoon, KY calls and said they cannot add him to the lease because it is their policy not to add someone who would not be living there. I asked why it took almost 8 weeks to tell me this and she said she called me the day I turned in the application. And she didn't...because I turned it in on a Saturday and she wasn't working. And on Monday, I called for the first time. So I find out that KY and WY are close friends through a maintenance friend of mine so I look up the head office. My husband calls them from Kuwait and speaks to the District Manager who says that she there should be no problem adding me to the lease since we're married. She said she'll have the regional manager, KN, call us (don't you love micromanaging?). We wait two days and WY calls me, not KN (because KN is traveling between properties and cannot call), and says they cannot add him mid-lease because I will be using a Power of Attorney. I explain that I've spoken with several military families that have never had a problem using a Power of Attorney to add their husbands to leases and that with this particular PoA I could buy a house in his name, open bank accounts in his name, etc. I told them they are the only company that didn't allow this. My husband and I both called today and left messages with the District Manager. We haven't heard anything. They've now given us 3 different reasons to why I cannot add him to the lease and have taken my application fee knowing he was deployed and have told me they can't add him...because he's deployed. He's got an appointment with JAG this Saturday. This is the 5th one because of all of this nonsense. Does anyone have any info? I've posted on a couple of military communities here in LJ but it's mostly wives just talking about how much they miss their husbands.
