advice on gnats, spider plants

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here, I’m a rather poor houseplant owner. Let’s just say that I’ve managed to kill two spider plants, and as far as I know those are supposed to be indestructible. But I’ve had a few other plants for a couple years now!

Anyhow, I’m here today because I have fungus gnats. Right now, I’ve got about 1/2 to 1 inch of sand on my plants, and hoping that’ll work. I was advised to also get a Cape Sundew, but the look of those kind of creep me out. As do butterworts. But I’m basically wondering if ANY carnivorous plant would take care of the fungus gnats? I DO like the look of pitcher plants.

OH and I’ve just bought my third spider plant. Advice? I never seem to get it right. I mean, my grandmother has managed to keep a money tree/jade/friendship tree alive for over 40 years, and a spider plant for at least 20. How in the hell do I manage to kill things? I’ve bought a phalaenopsis orchid a month and a half ago… it seems to be fine so far, haha. \

Thank you for any help!
