I have an African violet, rescued from the clearance rack of a local grocery, and it’s pretty sad. Most of the leaves are damaged in some way. I’ve had it for a few weeks and have been dutifully looking after it; now, it has a cluster of leaves growing in the center (suckers?).
What I’m wondering is, since the existing crown is so weak, should I allow the center to grow and take over the plant? Should I pull off all the damaged leaves, even if it leaves me with very little left? Or should I follow the instructions of the violet-growing websites and remove the suckers?
I’ve only had African violets for a few months now, and any advice would be much appreciated.
