so... hi! this is my first real community joining, i just thought id add in my two cents... *oh ho ho, im punny!* my names sam, and im a first-time-on-my-own, first year university student. this year ive lived off my (incredibly late) student loan, financial aid, and a bit o' money i saved up (im in canada, but as an "international" student, i could only get a job on campus- and sadly, i didnt qualify for any of the jobs) so, poor as hell... *thinks* im definately that... 1) groceries. on sale. ON SALE. (cannot stress that enough! i know everyones said it, but SERIOUSLY) 2) splitting the grocery bill with roomates - i have been doing this all year with my roomates - and it works. really, unbelievably well... im a girl, and i live with three guys, one of whom is known to eat 5 hot dogs in a sitting. (ah, metabolism...) they are also fond of homo milk, and by fond i mean 12 litres a week on average. so... milk is about... 5.25 for four litres... and it adds up. rather fast. i, on the other hand, dont drink milk often. (one glass a week, two tops) youd think id be wasting money, buying food with them. but. it works. im still saving money... buying things in bulk works. every time any of us goes grocery shopping, we initial the reciept and put it in a box on the fridge. at the end of the month, we add up what everyone bought, (usually about 400-450$) and determine how much each person spent. the people who bought less than that amount pay the people who bought more than that amount, and it all equals out. *this may be rambly. sorry. im tired* 3) if you want to call friends/family long distance, its really easy to convince parents to send you phone cards. they often come free with other things (i have been calling home with phone cards from tobacco companies...) or just make everyone call you :P 4) yes, i know beer is cheap, but ultimately, you drink *more* trying to get drunker. so the savings arent really there. buy hard liquor. carry a flask. 5) make a large amount of soup, and freeze it, so when youre hungry later and dont want to cook, you dont have to go out and buy anything. 6) curry is a worthwhile household spice. it can make anything tasty. 7) meat is expensive. even on sale. so is cheese. make it a treat, not a mealtime staple. veggies, fruits and rice/lentils/potatos/pasta are tons cheaper. okay, thats all i can think of now!! (im really still getting the hang of it.)
