Any Experience with Community Gardens?

We have a new community garden starting up a few blocks from our house, and I'm trying to decide whether to get a plot this year. I'm thinking that it could be a good way to help control the cost of food, which seems to be rising like mad here, and that it would be less expensive than trying to garden in containers, since I wouldn't have to buy containers or potting soil and the garden provides compost and mulch. I'm also thinking that it might be a good, low cost family activity to do with a toddler. On the other hand, I'm wondering whether it would be too much work for us to manage. I tend to be a pretty laid-back gardener in general; I plant things, I put down black anti-weed plastic and a ton of mulch, and pop in occasionally to be sure they have water, tomato cages, and aren't invaded by pests, and then harvest whatever there is to harvest at the end of the season without a ton of fuss inbetween. I'm a bit worried about the time involved in community gardening - ie. whether this is something we could do if we committed one weekend morning and an evening visit during the week - and whether people are going to be anal about how we keep our plot. I'm also wondering what we should plant, and how much we can manage in a 20x20 space. Honestly, that sounds HUGE... so I'm wondering if we should go with 10x20 instead?
