Any Last-Minute Advice?
Regarding the issue I posted about yesterday (apartment that is pet-friendly, but apparently only allows one pet and bans rabbits), here's what I did: 1) I set up an appointment to see the apartments after work tomorrow. The plan is to dress up, make a fabulous impression, name-drop my coworker (who's a good tenant) as a reference, talk about the fact that this place is my first choice AND I'm willing to pay the higher rent for a 2BR place... and then ask about pets. (I'm hoping that she doesn't bring it up first, so I can control the timing.) I'll have my "pet resumes" ready, complete with an adorable picture of the 2 of them (cat & rabbit) in the same cage, looking like little angels. (Another benefit of the photo is that the rabbit is white, and the cat is white with gray spots... so the photo really shows how CLEAN they are, as it's sort of obvious when a mostly-white animal is dirty.) The resumes talk about litter training, appropriate chewing, spaying & neutering, and nail trims, as well as the fact that in the 7 years I've had the rabbit, she's never damaged an apartment. I've gotten every security deposit back (actually, none of my previous apartments even knew about her, except for the current place -- but I'm not sure it's wise to tell a potential landlord that I hide pets). And I'm offering 3 pet references: my vet's office (every vet we've had has commented on how clean and well-behaved both pets are), and 2 of my friends. I figure the 2 friends I listed are somewhat more credible than the average friend because of their careers (one is a trainer; the other is a groomer), and they both know my animals really well. I'm also prepared to offer to pay an extra deposit, if need be. (That will suck, but not as much as not being able to move in at all.) 2) I made my cat an appointment for his yearly check-up, since I just got a reminder notice in the mail. The timing isn't the greatest (I have a stack of bills on my desk as it is, waiting for my next paycheck, and I have traffic court next week), but I wanted to make sure that the apartment manager doesn't call the vet and hear, "Oh, he's due for his check-up, and she hasn't scheduled it yet..." So that's one more avenue covered. The rabbit may be due for a check-up, too, but I'm not sure, because I haven't gotten anything in the mail recently. I sincerely hope that it doesn't rain tomorrow (it's supposed to, but only in the morning as of what they're saying now), because I plan to look as grown-up, responsible, and put-together as possible, and that will be extremely difficult if it's pouring down rain. At least I have a plan. It may well blow up in my face, but... it's better than nothing. Wish me luck. And thank you all SO MUCH for your advice.
