Appliances for a new home

Appliances for a new home

My bf and I will be moving into a house in a couple months and we'll be needing a washing machine, dryer, stove, and lawnmower. How can we cheap this up? I'm leaning toward a push mower since our front and back yard will be pretty darn tiny. I'm also hoping to set up a system from line drying in or outdoors, depending on if I can have an outdoor laundry line per the neighborhood rules. Is there anything else I can do now, while we're moving in, to save money down the line? We're planing on looking on Craigslist first for our appliances. Is it reasonable to ask someone to run a test load of clothes in a washer before buying it? How would I know if it worked? I know we'd be saving a lot of money going this route, but my worry is that if I bought something and then hooked it up and it didn't work as described, I'd be screwed. Any suggestions here? Any general new home owner tips you want to throw out are completely welcome, as well. Thank you for your time.
