I was preparing an avocado for dinner a few months ago and found that the pit already had a little sprout coming out of it. I decided to just pop it in a pot of top soil, put it on my usual plant watering schedule, and see if it did anything. It's now about a foot and a half tall and seems to be doing fine. I'm wondering what it's long-term odds are like if it stays in a pot. I live in zone 4, so planting it outside isn't really an option. I'm happy to get it progressively larger pots as it grows, but I know that avocado trees get fairly large. Is it eventually going to threaten suicide over life in a pot? Are there things I can do to avoid or postpone that?
