Bacon

Bacon

I love it, and eat it almost every day. But I limit myself to 2 slices a day, and after a while I realized how much of a waste of electricity it is to pan-fry those two slices every single day. For one thing, it's a waste of hot real estate in the pan. The other thing is that, since I'm only cooking for myself, I would buy smaller packages of bacon so that it wouldn't go bad. That means more money to buy each slice. So now, what I do is buy the huge 4 pound package of bacon, (about $2.50/lb where I live,) and broil it all right away. Broiled bacon tastes great! I can broil a pound in 6 minutes or so. Pan-frying two slices would take me 12 minutes or so (med-low heat=better bacon, to me) so this is a significant savings in power. In 24 minutes I cook 40+ slices that will keep wonderfully in the fridge in a Ziploc. (or, store brand storage bags lol.) Bacon reheats very well in the microwave, too - about 1 minute on high for 2 slices. Beyond the financial savings, this also gives me a time bonus of 5h 30m every month. 3 movies I wouldn't have had time to watch otherwise. :D Flipping bacon for 5 hours is not very mind-expanding. To broil the bacon, I line the bottom of my broiling pan with tin foil to catch the incredible amount of lard that will drip. I spray the top grill with Pam (don't skip this step, it makes cleanup waaay easier) - and make sure the bacon is about 6-8 inches from the heat. (Of course you know to keep the oven door slightly ajar while broiling.) After 2 minutes I take the broiling pan out, flip all the bacon, and then return it to the oven for another 2 minutes. After 1 minute of broiling per side, I turn the pan around 180 degrees so that the strips cook evenly. (The side by the door cooks a tad slower.) Once done I take the pan out, lay the bacon on paper towels and load the next round. Presto! Breakfast ready in 10 minutes, for about 3 weeks. :D
