Bay Laurel Cuttings/Shoots
I have a potted bay laurel that sent out a side shoot last spring. It's a good 6" away from the main trunk and is about 12" tall now. It's warmed up a lot here recently so all of the branches are sending up new buds, including this side shoot. I want to dig the shoot out and repot it to send to a friend. So first of all... how large of a root ball should I dig out to support the shoot? Second, is this the best time? The plant is in a foliar growth phase at the moment. I'm also experimenting with an air layered cutting that's been going for almost a year now. The moss is still green and vibrant, and I see good root development when I peek. I know when I remove this cutting, I won't have enough of a root ball to support the length of the cutting. So what's a good rule of thumb for cutting size with woody plants? Thanks!
