Beds

Any tips on getting cheap mattresses? I live in New York City, so used beds are out because of the bedbug problem. I see a sale at the local center for a 299 queen set, but I know the mattress is going to be hard. I laid on a softer mattress, and the salesperson said it had a 1/2 inch of memory foam which made it softer. This bed was 599, with tax and frame and delivery it was 715. Can I buy a cheaper firm/hard mattress, and then a memory foam/pillow top to make it softer? It seems as this is what mattress manufactures do with their bedding, which is start with the same basic mattress and add things on top of it. I can get a 4 inch memory foam topper for about $100 on Overstock.com. Alternatively, is there any significant difference between a 300 dollar and a 600 mattress? I can understand paying for good quality mattress, but the 715 is slightly over budget. Edit: I went with the 715 mattress, which included the mattress, boxspring, frame, mattress cover, and delivery. The 299 queenset mentioned above came out to about 550 with tax and delivery and frame and none of the freebies. I do have a 30 day return policy, so I will head to Ikea to see if I like anything there that would be much cheaper. Thanks!
