bitter cuke

bitter cuke

I picked my first cuke from the vine and served it up to guests for dinner last night in a salad. Much to my horror...it was incredibly bitter. It is a burpless variety that I grew from seed. The weirdest thing is, today, out of curiosity, I cut some off from the other end and it tasted fine! So..one end of the cuke is bitter, the other great. How strange is that? Does anyone know what causes this bitterness? Am I to expect that the rest of the crop will yield similar results?

I'm in Zone 6 if that info is needed.
