Bloomin’ Broccoli?

Bloomin’ Broccoli?

This is my first year growing broccoli (growing most things actually) and I'm not altogether sure what I'm doing. At first, last May, the little plants we bought were absolutely shriveled and stunted looking. A little time and a few splashes of miracle grow later, they had gotten huge and tall, thriving foliage and tight little cluster of florets. They stayed that way for about a 2 weeks, and now, over the last couple of days they've started blooming and shooting off these long spindley need-to-be-staked shoots with scrawny florets on top (isn't this called bolting?). Also, the bottom leaves are dropping off right and left. Now, my unoffical diagnosis was: "Dude, that plant be whack." But info I found on this page. Sounds a bit more like it. And while I'm crushed, I can accept that bloomed broccoli is inedible. Heh. Even if the idea of those kind of temperatures here in Nashville is just nuts. Especially considering the kind of torrential rains we've been getting for the last 2 weeks. My main question is... What in the world do I do about this? I'm not finding much info on how to fix broccoli. And I'm still inclinded to think that plant just be whack. ;)
