Bugs, illness or Martian heads?
I"m hoping someone can help me identify my diseases/bugs on melons, cucumber and tomatoes. First the cucumber...the other cukes have been fine, but I've been attacked by both spotted and striped cucumber beetles (seen on cuke and honeydew plants). I picked this guy today, and there's some kind of brown hard stuff on the outside. I threw it away, but in the mottled spots, the cuke felt hard as rock. Any idea what this might be? The others are all good and tasty. Melon deformities This is my first attempt growing melons (honeydew). Actually my second, but last year's attempt turned out to be patty pan squash. (Someone switched the tags on the plant I guess) The melons start out as little fuzzy guys shaped like walnuts, stay fuzzy and little for quite some time, then start growing. So far I have two actual non-fuzz melons and here they are. I'm planning on just letting them grow until maybe they're ripe and then trying to eat them. Unless someone tells me they're really alien heads and I should dispose of them. :( They're badly misshapen and the older one (first pic) has this same kind of brown crud that the above cuke has. Then I have a smaller melon (2nd pic) that is misshapen and now seems to be getting the crud. Click pics for bigger views. Anyone? Buehler, Buehler? And finally, my tomatoes. These are Better Boys (or maybe Big Boys...can't remember) and a number of branches are turning yellow like these. I've cut some off and disposed of them. My Caspian Pink has some similar branches, and my Celebrity looks near death. It had spotted leaves that I'm sure were from grasshoppers or leafhoppers. But oddly, all the tomatoes are producing many lovely fruits. It's just the foliage, about 20 percent, that looks bad. Except the Celebrity, and 100 percent of it looks bad, but good tomatoes! And then just so I'm not completely depressed, here's a picture of a couple of my Purple Ornamental Millets. I bought the seeds from Park Seed just because I thought they were lovely. I'm going to grow them again next year. My uncle the farmer said "Why the hell did you plant duck food?" I said "It's pretty." He said "Pretty but shitty." He says crazy stuff like that....he's very lovable. Now it's apparently getting this yellow stuff that must be pollen. It's just fun.
