Building a raised garden

Building a raised garden

My husband and I were at Lowe's this afternoon on a garage door opener shopping spree (SO exciting). While we were there, I decided to have a quick look in the lumber department to get a better idea of what I need to think about in terms of building a raised garden bed.

I'm looking at building two plots, each 4x6. I've heard red cedar is the best bet to use. Hardy, rot-resistant, etc. My husband suggested we weather-treat and stain the wood but man - the idea of doing that to something that is going to be right in contact with soil that is feeding our vegetables makes me REALLY uncomfortable. The same with using "liquid nails", which he also suggested.

What have you guys done in terms of building a raised garden from lumber? What route have you taken, what wood have you used, and how have you constructed it? (and keep in mind: I am handyman/construction-deficient. I know how to pound nails and screw things (ha ha) and that's about it.) I've researched a few websites on it (I particularly like this one: http://www.eartheasy.com/grow_raised_beds.htm ) but I'm curious what this community has to say.

P.S. - I did a quick search through the community to see if my questions might have already been answered and I couldn't find anything related to lumber and building specifics.
