Car Accident …

Recently I was in a bad car accident that involved me being t-boned by a kid who had her permit for a week. Not fun. I do have some poor skills to share that I learned from the experience - and a question. Things I learned... At the accident, two fire and ambulance companies arrived on the scene. One of the cops took charge of things, and made sure that I was pried and taken to the hospital by the volunteer force, so I wouldn't get billed. When I was more conscious, I thought that was pretty nice of him. While I guess you don't always get a choice, I did learn that if you call the volunteer ambulance company instead of the paid one - you save money. I made sure we have the volunteer company's number in our phone book now in case of future emergencies. At the hospital, I was told that my car insurance company would be billed for their services. I don't have medical insurance, so I asked them to make sure my prescriptions were for generics that were reasonable priced as possible while still working. They were able to do that, plus they gave me a pain med injection so I didn't have to take a pill that night - and gave me a sample of the medication my daughter had to take so I didn't have to purchase that one. My insurance company pays for us to have a rental car while we're looking for a replacement car for my poor totaled wreck. The rental car place wanted a 100 dollar deposit, but by asking the insurance company to arrange things for me and explain that I didn't have the money to make that deposit- I was able to have the fee waived. My eyeglasses were all bent up and the lenses scratched by me hitting the driver's side window and breaking it with my face. I took them to my eyeglass place (Wal-Mart vision center) when I went to go pick up my prescription to get them to try and straighten the frames at least. Not only did they do that for free, but the lady offered to talk to the manager to see if I could get a discount on new lenses (my warenty expired). To my surprise, due to the circumstances, the manager ordered me new lenses and put them on rush order even - for free! So I guess that's only really one poor skill, when I think about it - tell people your story and see if they're willing to help you out- there are still some good people in the world. Question: Does anyone have some used car buying tips? The insurance company is paying $6,300 dollars for our old vehicle's value, so I do have a decent amount to work with. I need something that is four door (I have three teenagers), reasonably good on gas millage, safe and reliable.
