Since others have shared today, I thought I’d show a bit of what’s going on around my yard. But first, an anecdote.
Mom (on the phone): Do you remember that shrub you got for me a few years ago? The one that got too big for the place we put it and then had to move it the other day?
Me: Yes…
Mom: Do you remember what it’s called?
Me: No. Sorry.
Mom: Oh. See, we moved it out to the edge of the yard and from the looks of things, the deer love it.
Me: So why do you need to know the name of it?
Mom: So we can get more!
Me: Mom! Sane people who garden do not *encourage* deer to come into the yard. If you plant more they’ll start eating everything!
Mom: Nah, it’ll be fine.
Me: *face/palm* Whatever you say, Mother.
Now, an image-heavy look at what’s going on in my yard today…
Daffodils. Not blooming yet, but getting close. These have been there a few years.
I do have one thing blooming. Dandelions. Lots of them. According to a horticulturist friend of mine, the basic definition of a weed is "something that’s growing where you don’t want it to grow." So, if I say I *want* them in the yard, they’re not weeds. *nods* That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it. :D
Daylily and as yet unidentified bulbs. Possibly daffodils. LOL I don’t remember. Should be a nice surprise in a few weeks.
More daylilies. I’ve got them sprouting all over the place.
Forsythia!! I’m so excited about my forsythia this year. I got it about three years ago when it was just a little guy. It didn’t bloom the first year as it was small and I bought it too late in the season. (It was already putting on leaves.) Then the next year my mother Mowed It Down! She says she didn’t know it was there. I say she wasn’t paying attention. Then last year it didn’t bloom. Perhaps it was still recovering from the Mower Incident. This year it’s covered in buds! *is excited*
Hyacinths are showing definite signs of progress.
Daylilies and irises. The irises never really died back. I have been seeing a few new shoots in other beds.
I think these are tulips. Again, another nice surprise in a couple of weeks.
A left-over of last fall. I put two of these garden mums in pots on the front steps last fall. Last Saturday I let Younger Son trim off the dead sticks. The other mum (in its own pot) is doing just as well.
