Caterpillars in the broccoli
My broccoli plants are being devoured by caterpillars. They do not look like cabbage loopers; they are not green, but very dark brown in various stripe patterns. They ARE fleshy like cabbage loopers, though. They seem to be coming from tiny white moths, so I thought surely they would be cabbage loopers. They are eating my kale and my broccoli. Picking them off by hand seems to be the only way to combat them, but they start out so small that by the time I see them they have eaten quite a lot, and also, my broccoli plants are more than three feet tall and leafy like a jungle. The caterpillars are just super hard to find. I used to keep a net over the garden, but it has some holes in it now- do you think replacing it will keep these guys out? Do you think trimming some of the leaves off of my broccoli plants would be okay for the plants? They are so branchy! I am about to get the third, very small, harvest, and after that I don't think the plants will last much longer anyway, between the heat and the caterpillars.
