Anyone have any advice on Chapter 13? I know I don't want to file bankruptcy, but I'm now apparently being taken to court for one of my debts, and suddenly I'm inundated with letters from local (Atlanta) lawyers wanting to "help" me, often offering Chapter 7 (bankruptcy, which, as I've said I don't want) or Chapter 13, which looks basically like debt consolidation, except that it's through a law firm rather than a credit counseling service. Is this legit? Does anyone have any experience with this? Apologies if this has been asked/answered before. Couldn't find anything that really addressed it in the Memories/Tags. My total debt is around $10K or less, and less than $3K of it is credit cards. The rest is medical, bounced checks, apartment security deposits and the like, if that makes a difference. I do NOT want to "get out of paying" the money I owe; I feel that I made the mistake, and I'd like to live up to that responsibility. I just don't seem to be living up to it fast enough for the creditors, and I don't see any financial windfall in the near future to make it all magically go away. Thanks in advance!
