Last Sunday while walking the dogs I was looking down at the sidewalk and saw all these cherry pits, then looked up and Holy jeezus! Not 100 feet from my very own home I discovered a mature bing cherry tree dripping with ripe cherries that were literally rotting on the branch. AND the tree was on the property of the electric company, on the lot where they house a transformer so, quite legitimately, not belonging to anyone in particular. It felt like a Lifetime movie moment. I started picking like crazy, then my partner joined me and we both picked for at least two hours and yielded at least 20 lbs. of cherries. So far, we have frozen 4 quarts, made 6 pints of low-sugar jam, made two qts of cherry brandy, canned 4 qts of preserves, eaten (for the first time in my adult life) as many cherries as I possibly wanted, and tonight, I’m finishing off the rest with a sweet cherry crumble. On a roll, we picked a gallon or so of mulberries from a tree in an apt. complex and made 6 pts. Of mulberry jam (which is QUITE good with lemon. Tonight also, I shall be canning grape leaves for future stuffed grape leaves. All free stuff from our little semi-urbanscape. (sigh). The universe, this week, has been kind.
