Chicken Soup

I ate a scrumptious bowl of chicken soup on Monday that has fed us for like 3 days. It contains: broth, almost a half a chicken (bones included), large chunks of carrot (skin on) and onion, and spices. That was it. It was brilliantly simple and delicious. I am not a cook at all...for someone on a tight budget, I eat out a lot because I just don't A) like to cook and B) have the foresight to plan so I can have the ingredients to cook. I CAN cook and follow a recipe and such but it's just not my forte. But this soup has got me thinking. What if I put a cut up whole chicken and a bunch of cut up carrots and onions in my slow cooker along with some water and chicken broth and maybe some spices off my rack and see what happens. I could even cook up some pasta or rice to put the soup over on some days. But I don't know how long such a thing would take to cook. I'm thinking on low for 5 hours? Help me out here. If I want to put the pasta in the soup do I cook the pasta first? TIA
