Chickens in Towns
A local town councilman around here recently proposed amending an ordinance to allow townfolk the right to own chickens. The councilman proposed a limit of 10 chickens and that slaughtering the birds would be prohibited. The council ultimately shot down the proposal but it got me wondering: does anyone around here who lives in a suburban or urban setting own chickens? What are your town's ordinances like regarding livestock ownership? Pros and cons to owning the chickens (or any other type of livestock)? I think we're going to see a lot more of this type of thing -- Victory gardens, backyard livestock, etc -- that hearkens back to the Pre-WWII/Depression Era. I'm not sure how I'd feel about this if I lived in a town but it definitely got me thinking. I could easily own chickens where I live in the country, but I don't know if I would want to undertake something like that.
