Сleaning birkenstocks

Сleaning birkenstocks

I have a pair of old and wonderfully broken-in Birkenstocks. The footbed is badly in need of a real cleaning. Previously, I have just scrubbed it with a brush under running water but that isn’t really doing the trick. They’re somewhat smelly (not overwhelmingly), feel tacky on the feet and leave residue on my feet (ew!). My boyfriend has started making the obligitory “dirty hippie” comments, haha. :)

Rather than buy the special Birkenstock cleaning kit just for the footbed cleaner, does anyone have suggestions on something else to try? Thanks!

I’m wondering the same thing. I heard diluted dish soap and a “nail brush” but I feel something better must exist. A while back I also read about putting the shoes in a bag of kitty litter overnight…
