Clematis question

Clematis question

Hello there, I'm a novice, just starting my garden this year in a warm climate, and I need some info on the habits of clematis plant. I can't find this tidbit on the web, so I'm not sure if I've killed my plants, or they are in a dormant stage. I live in northern california, zone 9b (sunset zone 17). I planted two clematis in late september, purchased from a supplier in Michigan. After a little movement shock (although I did keep them out of direct sun for a few days), they began to grown nicely, putting out new leaves and twining a bit around the trellis' I got for them. They were both about 1 foot tall. Now, as the cold (it occasionally gets to about 28 degrees here, not very cold, but below freezing), they have turned completely brown, lost all leaves, and have fallen off the trellis'. Are they dead? Are they dormant? Should I just wait for March/April and see if they come back? Thank you for the great info and tips I've found here. I know my roses are better because of advice I've gotten here....
