A lot of people have no idea how well clothes last if you take care of them (washing them properly, mending when they need it, etc.). I still have two pairs of socks which I bought in my first year of college (1990). I will grant that the red pair has survived partially through not being worn much (I don't wear too much red), but the grey pair has had about eight holes darned in it and is still in weekly use. This might not work too well for outerwear (unless your personal style lends itself to patches), but frequently you can alter things--long-sleeved to short-sleeved, the classic pants-to-shorts, a dress to a skirt, etc. Sewing and mending are invaluable skills.
