Collection agency scam.

Collection agency scam.

Hi, new here. I am not sure if this is on-topic. I will delete it if it is not. It's about a collection agency scam.

My workplace got a message with a woman's voice saying to call "Ken Hughes" (888 number), that it wasn't a sales call or a solicitation, and that it was "very important". No one's name was mentioned, and no clue as to what it was about. I smelled a scam.

Sure enough, it is. You call the number, and if you get a person, they say they work for a collection agency and you need to send them money. Uh huh. I thought this might be some guy scamming from his apartment.

Nope. They are actually registered as a collection agency with two offices, one in Chicago and one in NY. They can (and have) ordered a potential victim's credit report, find a debt that the person paid off ten years ago, then call him and try to demand the money. It sounds pretty official, since they have your SSN and the details of your credit history. They are counting on that person to be intimidated enough to comply.

However, if the victim knows his/her rights, knows the debt is clear, and starts to push back, they back off and say "Sorry, our mistake. We won't call you again."

Some victims they get by using that random calling program that doesn't ask for the victim's name. Then if they get a person calling back saying "I don't owe anybody!", they just say "Sorry, we have the wrong number.", and move on.

If you ever get this scam or something like it, go to THIS SITE to report it. You can find more information on this scam and others at www.ripoffreport.com. In the meantime, keep records of all of your debts, including the ones you paid off.
