Columbines and leafminers

If your columbine has wiggly trails on the leaves, they're infested with leafminers. As the name suggests, these pests live inside the leaves, so most spray applications don't affect them. Instead of reaching for a systemic pesticide-an irresponsible thing to do-simply cut the plant off flush with the ground after it finishes blooming and destroy the leaves. This will not kill the columbines; in fact, it will encourage more roots and a stronger plant next year.

It's best to examine columbines for leafminers before purchasing them. In recent years, I've seen many infested columbines at the larger garden centers.
