compost

compost

I have a question for you composters: I'm attempting (for the second time) to start a compost. This is what I've done: I have a 25 gallon plastic container, with holes drilled in the bottom, sitting on top of cinder blocks. I layered a few inches each of alternating fresh grass clippings, dried grass/leaves and kitchen scraps (fruit/veg only and coffee grounds). Watered each layer before the new one was added. I did this for about 3/4ths of the container, and am adding new layers of kitchen scrap and green plant material daily. Question. Now what? I know I am supposed to stir it, but when and how often? What about adding to it? Do I wait until it's starting to decompose? What do I do from here? Please tell me if it's a good start, and if you have any advice/comments?! I tried starting a compost last year, and it failed miserably. Mainly because I neglected it, but I did so out of lack of information regarding how to maintain it. Thanks in advance!
