Composting with wood ash

Composting with wood ash

I have quite acidic soil and a couple of plants I'm putting in this year want sweeter soil so I was going to burn some fallen (untreated/unpainted) branches, but I have heard conflicting opinions on the issue - both that a little wood ash is a good thing and that the risk of mucking up the pH of your soil outweighs the benefit. Also, I've got a "lazy" compost heap with leaves & occasional grass clippings that I would add the rest of the woodash to and thought I'd ask if anyone here has any experience with it. ~Å~
