container plant questions
Bear with me, I'm a novice... 1) I have a guzmania that has developed several babies around the base, 'pups' I think they are called. I read that I can separate them to make new plants but is it ok to leave them where they are? 2) I bought a small heather plant which I would like to plant outside, but it needs ericacious compost while the soil here is clayish. Would it work if I was to repot the plant in a larger pot with the right compost and then sink the pot into one of my beds? 3) Is it ok to plant the garden roses that you can buy at this time for year in containers? I have some but I haven't decided where to plant them yet. Would it be ok to repot them in a larger container and leave them for a year, or even permanently? 4) I planted some wild rocket in pots of compost outdoors in late July, which I know is too late but I wanted to see what would happen anyway. The leaves are still quite tiny and they have turned shades ofyellow, orange, purple, red and pink. It's very pretty but I guess not good to eat, right? Should I just compost them and start again at the right time next year? 5) I was given a calla lily about 6 weeks ago and the flowers were closed. They still haven't opened. Is there anything I should be doing to help them open? Any replies sincerely appreciated. I've posted before but I'm in Cambridge, England if people don't remember.
