Contorted Filbert

Contorted Filbert

I was at Home Depot and Menards (like HD but cheaper) scouting out the last of the plants when I found a neat-looking plant called ‘contorted filbert.’ All their shrubs are 50% off, so the large plant (3′-4′ tall) was $25 and the small one (2′ tall) was $15. The only reason I didn’t buy one or two was because it was covered in brown and dying leaves.

I googled a bit when I got home and found out it looks like a great little shrub (I’m in zone 5), but there is an ‘eastern filbert blight’ too look out for, marked by cankers on the bark. Since I didn’t know about these I didn’t look for them and the cell phone pic I took focused on the leaves.

So, any ideas what’s wrong with this guy? Does it look curable or should I save my money? (The websites I found it for sale on were quite a bit more expensive.) I figured it could also be some sort of rust, or is it just shedding leaves because it’s fall? (wishful thinking, I think…)
