Creative way to cut housing costs?
I'm in the process of looking for a new place to live (most likely in or near Portland, Ore.). I'm pretty broke/in debt and housing has always been my biggest cost (like, more than 50 percent of my income) and I'm looking for creative housing ideas. I know that sharing space with others brings down the cost, but that's really not something I want to do right now (for a number of personal reason...I just need my own space). While I am looking for something that offers privacy, I don't need a lot in terms of amenities. I really just need a bed, a toilet and shower, and a small kitchen. I'd love to live in a yurt, but I haven't heard of any place that rents them, and I don't really have property to build one on. Is there anything out there beside your basic studios and cheapo one-beds? I've also heard of some program where you work on an organic farm in exchange for food and housing. Something like that is interesting to me. Otherwise, any tips on keeping housing costs down? I've figured out how to minimize everything else (I don't plan on having cable or eating out or buying much furniture). Any creative/crazy ideas?
