Damn Georgia Clay
I have been spending the past few weekends getting my plots ready for planting. The strange thing about my soil is that I have different types of soil in almost every plot and I didn't do it! Last year I did the best I could when I started the garden but I was exhausted from digging. I have a bunch of red clay. And in some places, a weird crunchy yellow type of dirt. I mixed these plots with compost and manure last year. In these various plots went brussell sprouts, squash, cantaloupe and watermelon. They produced only a little and nothing worth eating. Now that also could be because we had a drought and the bees were hiding out. I do know that when that clay dries, it is like cement. Maybe it is not even the clay, it could be I just didn't have the soil prepared properly. I do mulch to keep it moist and I plan on rotating the crop this year. My question(s): What can I do to prepare this soil better? Should I mix it with sand and more dirt? What are some veggies that can produce well in such soil?
