digital audio books?

I feel like I’ve seen this question posted before, but can’t find it. If it has, please feel free to point me back to that post.

I walk about an hour total a day to/from campus. Generally I listen to music, but realized that I could also be listening to books “on tape” instead. I looked into this through my local library system, but unfortunately all The Wisconsin Public Library Consortium supports is a system that isn’t Mac-compatible. *sigh*

I’m looking for mostly fiction, and it doesn’t need to be new fiction. In fact, I think this would be a way for me to catch up on “classics” and work on “reading” through the Banned Books list.
I’ve seen a few sites that you have to pay for. Are there any that are not virus-laden that are free? I’m but a poor grad student and would love to find a *legal* way to do this.
