Dingey living room!?!

Dingey living room!?!

I just wanna say thinks to the suggestions I got about the 1950's housewife theme. I managed to get some prints up on the wall, a Campbell's Soup utensil holder thing, and some cute little old-fashioned muffin pattered dish-towels. The kitchen looks a lot better now.

Now I've got the problem of light in my living-room. It's a fairly large room, plus we have a mezzanine floor which runs across the centre. It's really cool, but there's only really one small window in the lower part of the room and it looks extremely dingey. Does anyone have any good tips (other than to put up mirrors) to try and create more light in the place? Another one of the reasons it's so dark is because the carpet is dark blue, and we cant afford to change that right now.

So does anyone have any fairly cost-free methods of brightening a place up?

All advice is greatly greatly appreciated! Thanks!
