disputing impound fees

Some time ago (week(s)? a month or two?) my truck was towed to an impound yard. I didn't know until about four days ago that it had been towed at all, and was only told this morning where it was. The impound yard did not make any effort to notify me. Can I still be billed for the entire time it was sitting there, or is that illegal? Google is only giving me results for DUI, DWLS/R/C and DWOI impounds, which don't apply to my situation. I'm in Fairbanks, Alaska. Thanks! The ex and I had two operating vehicles when we broke up. One was a car, which I got, and the other was a truck, which he got. We were still BFFs, so it made sense to avoid the re-titling fees and keep both of our names on both of the vehicles. He flew out of state last summer to take care of his dying father, and hasn't come back since. While he was gone, he left his truck parked at his brother's house. About two months ago, he gave the truck to me. Sometime this winter, all of the cars in his brother's parking lot needed to be moved for snow removal. I don't understand this part of the story (because everyone has a different version) but long story short, the truck didn't get moved. (Yes, if I'd known it needed to be moved, I would certainly have moved it). The truck was impounded because it had not been moved.
