Divorce Lawyer for Stay-at-home-mom?
So a friend of ours is a young mother, married with two small boys. Her husband is the sole wage-earner of the family. He has, however, a history of physical and emotional abuse. Lately things have gotten very bad and he's told her that he wants a divorce. While I obviously only know half of the story, it sounds like he is just looking to shed some resonsibility (and smoke his weed without being hassled). She does not have much earning power on her own as she does not possess even a high school diploma. He says he wants to do a "no contest" divorce, I guess through one of those kits. My thinking though, is that she'd be insane not to get a lawyer in this instance. If the divorce goes through, she will need child support from him to survive. And with his history of abuse, I think that the courts would be generous to her. The main problem would be money, as attorneys aren't free. Are there any programs to provide legal assistance to women in this situation who are without means? She resides in the state of Georgia.
