Earwig Problems

Earwig Problems

Hey everyone. *waves* I'm new to this community, and fairly new to gardening. Image hosting by Photobucket My problem is that our garden seems to be inundated with seemingly thousands of earwigs. I have no idea how to get rid of these little buggers long term. Our whole yard is affected, and I've tried the whole "rolled up newspaper" trick but it doesn't even dent the population. Last year, our neighbors were re-landscaping their entire yard, and it seems that all of the earwigs that were disrupted from that either came into our yard, and even worse into our house. It got to the point where if we left a towel on the floor for even a minute a few seconds later it would become the earwig Hilton. They were drowning in our cat's water dish and constantly coming up through the drains. I can only imagine what the problem will be like when we start landscaping our yard this year. I'm not too keen on having the whole area sprayed with pesticides. We have cats and are planning on getting a puppy in a few months, plus the whole thing seems to be pretty expensive. However I will do it if it is a last resort. =/ Do you know of any way to permanently get rid of, or at least control an earwig explosion? I'm trying to make our yard more bird friendly (I've heard that lots of birds will help get rid of them), and I've heard in passing that toads might help with them as well. Any ideas? I'm starting to get nightmares about these little buggers. =)
