Eviction and Moving Into A Fixer-Upper

Eviction and Moving Into A Fixer-Upper

Ok, Poor_skills, lend me your knowledge!

Back Story: My husband and I are getting evicted from our current place of residence. My grandparents had been living with us and helping us pay rent, but after a downturn in the health of my grandmother they decided it was better for them to go live with my mother, regardless of the fact that she uses them as live-in babysitters for my youngest brothers (one of whom is developmentally disabled) and is on/off drugs. So now we can’t afford the rent here, and are a month and a half behind as it is.

Anywho, [/bitterness]. So the eviction is actually coming at a "good time", if you can call it that. J had a contract job last week and got a week’s pay (or will be, when the check comes), gets paid his VA disability on the 31st (and we’re not overdrawn this month so the bank account won’t eat it, yay!) and his college loan account had a credit on it so we’re going to be getting a series of checks from them to disburse the overage (about $500 as far as his financial aid lady could tell). So we will have a little money to move with.

And we have somewhere to move to, how grand is that?! His aunt owns a little house in a co-op neighborhood about an hour and a half north of where we are now, the operating fees for which are less per month than what we make with just his disability, so even if he can’t find another job right away we should be warm, if not entirely comfortable.

Now, the house has been uninhabited/inhabited by unscrupulous persons (they let a friend of theirs live there free in return for "cleaning up the place" and he only further trashed it). It needs badly to be cleaned. I am 8 months pregnant. Due to chemical and other toxin worries (mold, ahoy!) I am not being allowed to help with the clean up. I get to "pack nice light things into small boxes in the old, clean house" -___-;;

What I Need To Know:
What is the best way to kill mold and other nasties on/in the walls, cupboards, closets, etc of a house? The hardwood floors are in relatively good shape and not moldy, so I’m confident I know how to clean those. And the bathrooms I can deal with (with my trusty scrubbie pad and some CLR!). All their furniture is going into off-site storage so I’m not concerned with cleaning it– we’ll be bringing our own furniture with us. Is there anything else I should be worried about in a house that’s been largely uninhabited for about 3 years?

THANKS GUYS :-)
