I was moving earlier this year, so my new garden is just getting started. I have a whole two tomato plants, about a half-dozen peppers, five basils, two purslane, and pumpkins, gourds, squash, basil and dill as fortnight-old seedlings.
My big problems are: 1) not a lot of full sun area; their are big trees in surrounding yards that shade over into mine – despite some judicious trimming with a pole-saw, I just can’t reach high enough to get the full, all-day sun everywhere, and 2) watering properly – I’m south of Houston, Texas. I have one 75′ long drip hose that I’m using, but I’ve about maxed it out for area.
Should I buy another drip hose (cheaper) or fork over the dough for a real drip-irrigation system? I’m unemployed right now, but gardening is keeping me busy and feeling a little bit useful, but I don’t know that the drip is that much better.
Also, what would be good for a fall garden? I’m looking at www.superseeds – sweet corn, purple beans, escarole, lettuce, parsley – I really like to grow a lot of salad greens and herbs. Anyone have other suggestions as to things that might do well with dappled almost-full sun? I’m not sure about the corn.
