FINALLY getting rid of the 1 stupid card

We have this *1 stupid credit card*. It started off with a decent limit, but we were young, and kept asking for an increae on it. And they kept giving it to us. The final limit ended up being $6300. We weren't able to pay the minimum payment, so it went over the limit with late fees and over the limit fees. The interest alone was $140 (or so) a month. It went all the way up to around $7500. We paid it back down to the limit at tax time, but the same cycle repeated itself with over the limit fees and late fees. Finally, once it was back up to about $7000 (only a few months after we paid it down to the limit), we put it on a debt consolidation program. That was 3 years ago and we've only been paying.5% interest on it. It got paid on time every single month. Well, we missed a payment a few months ago when we bought a house. It was by no means intentional. It simply got overlooked with all of the house commotion. At least that's the conclusion we've come to. So, the credit card company kicked us off of the debt consolidation program and put our interest back up to 23%. We owe just under $4000 on it, but haven't been seeing that going down at all due to the $80some a month in interest.

So, we're paying it off this month with our tax return. My husband wants to try to get them to let us pay it off with closer to $3000, but I've never heard of a credit card company doing that. Honestly, $2000 of that debt (that I can remember with absolute certainty) wasn't from actual purchases anyways. That was just over the limit fees and late payment fees. I understand completely that that was all our fault. I'm just wondering if they'll consider that. We've paid waaaaay more than that since we faugt with that *1 stupid card* for 3-4 years before doing the debt consolidation.

So, does anybody have any experiences with trying to weazel down the pay-off amount on a credit card?
