for the poor skills kitchen community…

How do you soften a hard 2 day old french bread miniloaf? I bought two miniloaves from trader joe's, ate one while it was fresh and soft, left the other whole loaf in the bag it came in and now its a rock. I can barely saw through it with my bread knife because its so dang hard. I threw the remainder of the first loaf into the microwave and it came out chewy and even harder to cut. Any ideas on how to soften an entire loaf that is too hard to cut? Also any tips on how to prevent this? Should I precut it before putting it in a freezer bag or tupperware container?
