A recent discussion here about the peas American people call English peas got me thinking. I'm English and I just call them peas. From where I'm standing you might as well talk about English carrots or English potatoes. There are other kinds of legume of course, but they're no more or less English than peas. I grow French beans, Spanish onions, Jerusalem artichokes, Brussels sprouts and Hungarian rye. Neighbours of mine grow Chinese cabbage, Japanese greens and American land cress. Well 'Jerusalem artichoke' is, supposedly, a corruption of girasole, which means sunflower in Italian. 'French beans' seem quite similar to the haricots verts eaten in France. But the other names?
