free plants from Canadian Tire store
I have been planting the free plants I just brought home from Canadian Tire this morning. I have been putting them in the three beds that willem has made for me along the edges of other plants. That thick straw I put down did a great job of killing the weeds for me! I could just pull it back and dig into the soil with my hands. I planted a few perennials, like about a hundred, and a lot more annuals, like maybe 300 plants. I put the perennials where they will be all the time and then put the annuals around them where they can look nice this year. They are not dead plants this time. I guess they just made annuals free! Yippee! I used a pretty, low, bluish basket from the dump and did the same thing, then hung it up from one of the rails of the top of the little ‘breeze way’ between the lane and the perennial slope. It’s been the perfect day for doing all this. It’s about room temperature outside and quite overcast. I still have about a tray of perennials and two trays of annuals to plant, but I'm going to have to dig up alongside other beds, mostly just remove the tall grass that is invading the perennial beds, before I can plant these. I am glad to see how useful the straw is. I think I’ll put more straw down to ensure the demise of more of the grass, too.
