From dinner to growing plant :)

From dinner to growing plant :)

It's me again, the amaryllis lady *g*, here to share some more cool photos! So my SO and I are wandering around the grocery store one day here in San Jose, & we're in the produce area where I see cactus 'leaves' (or whatever you call them). I'd had a cactus plant about a decade ago when I lived up in Sacramento, & had been wanting to get another one..so I figured I'd give it a shot. So we bought one of the cactus 'leaves' & took it home; it was kind of thin and dehydrated looking so I wasn't positive it'd work, but I went for it anyway (if I recall correctly, it cost less than a dollar, so there'd be no great loss if it didn't work). I sliced a thin slice off of the bottom where it was dry & kind of funky looking, & stuck it in a planter full of potting soil. Watered it regularly (well, regularly as cacti go, anyway), & it slowly filled in again & looked plump. In time I could see roots peeking out of the bottom, & was confident that it was at least rooting, if not growing. Yay! But wait, it gets better..one day, I see something on the side of the cactus..oh cool, it looks like a flower! A couple of days later, there were 2 more little flowery looking things..like this. At this point, I was pretty pleased with my experiment, & since it looked a little big for the pot it was in & was sending some roots up rather than down, I moved it to a bigger planter. Little did I know that those weren't flowers..they're new 'arms' to the cactus! Yay! What was once destined to be someone's dinner is now my growing cactus plant! :D
