fuel oil: lock-in price versus COD
All righty, then, it's that dreaded time of year, where those of us in cooler places north of the Equator are thinking about the winter's fuel oil. I've been calling around for prices and am finding that COD prices at the moment are much lower than pre-buy. We've always done pre-buy/automatic delivery but with the vast (60 cents per gallon, in some cases) price difference, I'm thinking COD may have something to recommend it. Factors involved: We live in New England. I work from home, so keeping tabs on the oil situation is pretty easy. We have a wood stove and, at the moment, quite a bit of wood in reserve, but while it supplements the fuel oil, it doesn't replace using the furnace. For one thing, we have forced hot water heat and no separate water heater, and while I don't mind a cooler house, hot showers are a must! Anyone have recommendations one way or the other? I know oil prices _could_ jump at any time, but I feel like we're betting against ourselves by locking in at a very high rate now.
