This summer I'd like to do some container gardening on my fire escape. Last year I sucessfully grew some pretty plants, but after about August, they were destroyed and totally eaten up (even my Venus Flytrap!). I live in the city - I mean downtown, with homeless people and bus routes and parallel parking - but we have a bad squirrel problem. They live in the trees behind my building, dig through the dumpsters, and are bold and unafraid. My question: what to do about these pests? They crawl in my open windows (which means I need to buy window screens now), run inside when my door is open, and eat all my plants! Is there a safe/natural way to get rid of them? It's illegal to shoot them (obviously), and I don't want to use poison because I have a very nosey cat. About the cat - they're not afraid of her, and she doesn't exactly know what they are. So what do I do? I'd love to plant some veggies, but I don't want them all eaten by the squirrels. Also, anyone know what types of veggies go well with enormous amounts of sunlight? There is no shade on my fire escape, and it's black, so it gets HOT. Certain things will fry if they're intended for partial shade. Thanks!
