I've been working on raised square foot beds for the last few days: I can't call what my yard has "dirt". More like clay laced with rocks. :) After bagging and hauling a cubic yard of dirt, building the boxes, filling them and planting them, I'm pretty worn out. It's been totally worth the effort, though: I can already tell these plants are going to rock compared to what I'm used to growing. Everything still needs a layer of mulch to prevent evaporation but everything is pretty much done, so I wanted to share with sympathetic ears. :) It's all herbs, vegetables, and flowers that butterflies like. I can't wait for the flowers to all bloom! What I see out my back door. A verbena flowerhead: this thing is about as tall as I am! First peppers of the season: a 'fooled you' jalapeno (tastes like one but doesn't burn) and a 'senorita' jalapeno behind it. First tomato of the season: I found two more on the same plant a little later. It's a patio tomato. Lemon cucumber, which is growing several inches a day: hope it survives the impending heat! Sweet Williams, dwarf chrysanthemum (when they bloom they'll be purple), and a lavender still in a pot. The herb & vegetable patch. Can you tell I like oregano? California poppies and more dwarf chrysanthemums (I think). Butterfly weed. Mint-o-rama! Apple mint, chocolate mint, orange mint, regular mint, and two kinds of spearmint. These are going into a separate raised bed with a perforated bottom so they don't take over the gardens (like the lemon balm did, OMG!). Yarrow, 'Paprika' variety. Butterfly garden.
